Stepping Out of the Box
Let's go back in time a few months to understand how I came to this decision. It was May and I was in Yosemite for a photography workshop with Rodney Lough Jr. During the workshop I had several conversations with Rodney and the other attendees about photography (go figure). We talked about digital vs. film, which still seems to be a hot topic in the photography community. Digital has come a long way as far as matching the resolution that film has, but still has its short comings. For example my Canon 5D is supposed to be on equal ground with medium format film. I personally don't see it as I now have both and feel my Mamiya RB67 Pro SD is far superior in resolution, not to mention the larger print sizes possible. Anyway, back to the story. A couple of folks at the workshop used film cameras ranging from 35mm to large format. Being an inquisitive person, I asked questions, peered through the ground glass of Rodney's Arca Swiss large format camera and the waist level finder of a Hasselblad.
I was amazed at how much you could see, opposed to looking through my viewfinder, which in comparison felt like a pinhole in a shoebox. The other thing with the large format was the image orientation, everything was upside down, talk about confusing. Obviously just looking through the cameras didn't tell me anything about the quality of images, but I now had a better understanding of the mechanics of these types of cameras. Prior to the workshop I had purchased a Canon 35mm film camera so I was a little familiar with the different film types and brands. After the workshop I got to thinking that my 35mm film camera is no better than my Canon 5D and in all respects the 5D is a superior camera. So about 3 months ago I researched medium and large format film cameras trying to make the decision as to which way to go with my photography. I decided that medium format was what I wanted to use as my stepping stone into the world of analog photography.
I purchased a Mamiya RB67 Pro SD kit about 2 months ago in many different pieces to get exactly what I wanted. Now being primarily a landscape photographer the RB67 was not the lightest choice I could have made, but it offered the image size I wanted and built to handle abuse. I've only run a single roll of film through it at the time of this writing, which was Ilford Delta 100 (B&W). The results where better than I had expected for my first time out. I wasn't to concerned with subject matter, this first run was more for familiarity and getting the exposure correct. The downside to all of this is the processing; I don't know the first thing about film processing and sending it off takes for ever. It took 10 days to get my results back, most of which was just shipping time (Florida to California and back).
Then of course now I have the problem of scanning the negatives, which will most likely have to be sent out. I could have had it done at the time of processing, but I had no idea what to expect and didn't want to pay for bad shots. All in all my film experience has not been bad, just a bit of a slower process than with digital. The other day I purchased a few rolls of Fuji's Velvia 50 which they re-introduced after discontinuing a while back. So hopefully in the next few months I will get out take some shots that I can get scanned for some comparisons between the Mamiya and Canon 5D.
